Welcome to our endpoint security module. It is very important to make sure that your endpoints, or your devices on your network are secure, and you can do this by hardening them. Endpoints are the hosts on your network, and you should make sure that they are properly hardened and tested to a baseline configuration.

You should install antivirus software on these devices and make sure that the virus definitions are updated frequently. You should software-based firewalls on the devices and also consider using a software-based intrusion detection prevention system. You should make sure that you patch and update the systems regularly, disable any unneeded services and uninstall any unneeded software.

For the CISSP examination, you should remember that you need a baseline configuration and that all endpoints should be secured to meet that baseline as a minimum standard for security. Bastion hosts are locks down systems or services that are accessible from the Internet. Since these systems are accessible from the Internet, it is very important that you disable any unneeded services, turn off file sharing, limit the amount of open ports, and make sure that you do not have any unnecessary software or utilities on the machine because it will most likely be attacked by outside individuals.

Any computer that is placed in a non-trusted network segment, such as the demilitarized zone or DMZ, should be considered a bastion host and should be closely monitored for any attempts of intrusion. Your firewalls should also be considered bastion hosts since they are accessible from the Internet. For the CISSP examination you should be familiar with bastion hosts.
